It is important that baby teeth don’t fall out prematurely as they help guide growth of the jaw bones and ensure that adult teeth come through in their correct position.
Children’s teeth are vulnerable to decay as the pits and fissures can be deep and difficult to clean. To prevent plaque accumulating and decay developing, fissure sealants can be applied to fill in these grooves. This creates a protective barrier between the tooth enamel and plaque. The best time to apply sealants is as soon as the teeth erupt.
Finally when the teeth first erupt into the mouth, they are immature and thus vulnerable to decay. It is important that sugar intake especially in frequency is limited to only at meal times. Also fruit juices, cordial and fizzy drinks all have high concentration of sugar and acid. After having these drinks, kids should rinse their mouth with water to neutralise the effects of the acids.
It is just as important to avoid sticky and sugary foods such as hard lollies, caramel or toffee as these adhere to the teeth long after eating them
